The Lycaenidae makes up about 40% of the known butterfly species with about 6000 species in the world. They are also called gossamer-winged butterflies.  Other family members include the blues (Polyommatinae), the coppers (Lycaeninae), the hairstreaks (Theclinae) and the harvesters (Miletinae).
