Lucanidae family

Lucanidae (or Stag Beetles) consists of about 1,200 species of beetle in the world.  They are called Stag Beetles because of the set of large mandibles found on the males of most species which look like a set of antlers found on stags.

This specie is definitely a corner stone of any beetle collector.  Although most lack any vibrant colors (with the few exceptions such as Phalacrognathus muelleri (Rainbow Stag Beetle) from Australia or the Allotopus species with its vibrant golden shine), most have intricate mandibles with some species such as the Dorcus titatus titanus reaching incredible size of 10 cm.  They can almost be used as can openers!
