Carabidae – family
The beetles which belong Carabidae family are known as ground beetles. They have lost their ability for flight but they have instead developed a meaner side. They have evolved to become fierce carnivores, often hunting down their preys. There are more than 40,000 species found worldwide. Some species of ground beetles such as the members of the Brachinus genus (known as Bombardier beetles) are noted their ability to jet a squirt of hot foul-smelling liquid from their abdomens.
